Measuring Health: A Guide to Rating Scales and Questionnaires by Newell McDowell, Worldwide economic constraints on health care systems have stressed the need to monitor the outcomes of care and the output of the health system. This is the second edition of a reference book that provides in-depth reviews of the quality of the leading health measurements that are used for these purposes. Its principal aim is to guide the reader in choosing among rival measurement methods and to score the instrument chosen. The book also provides a critical overview of the field of health measurement, with a technical introduction and discussion of the history and future directions for health measurements. Eighty-eight measurements that evaluate health via questionnaires or rating scales are reviewed. Accounts of the 50 scales included in the first edition have been updated, the original chapters have been expanded to include new methods, and two new chapters on depression measurements and mental status testing have been added. The book covers measurements of physical disability, social health, psychological well-being, depression, mental status, pain, general health status and quality of life. Each chapter presents a tabular comparison of the quality of the instruments. The description of each method includes its purpose and conceptual basis, its reliability and validity, and a copy of the scale. This book is intended as a reference work for researchers from the medical and social sciences, and for health professionals wishing to evaluate the progress of their patients. It has also been used as a text in health services research courses.
Methods in Neuronal Modeling: From Ions to Networks by Christof Koch, Much research focuses on the question of how information is processed in nervous systems, from the level of individual ionic channels to large-scale neuronal networks, and from "simple" animals such as sea slugs and flies to cats and primates. New interdisciplinary methodologies combine a bottom-up experimental methodology with the more top-down-driven computational and modeling approach. This book serves as a handbook of computational methods and techniques for modeling the functional properties of single and groups of nerve cells. The contributors highlight several key trends: (1) the tightening link between analytical/numerical models and the associated experimental data, (2) the broadening of modeling methods, at both the subcellular level and the level of large neuronal networks that incorporate real biophysical properties of neurons as well as the statistical properties of spike trains, and (3) the organization of the data gained by physical emulation of the nervous system components through the use of very large scale circuit integration (VLSI) technology. The field of neuroscience has grown dramatically since the first edition of this book was published nine years ago. Half of the chapters of the second edition are completely new; the remaining ones have all been thoroughly revised. Many chapters provide an opportunity for interactive tutorials and simulation programs. They can be accessed via Christ of Koch's Website http: //www.klab.caltech.
National Disaster Medical System - The National Disaster Medical System, or NDMS, is a federal-state-local-private partnership formed in 1983 to provide a coordinated national medical response in the event of natural disasters or an overseas military conflict that overwhelms the normal health care system. The official web site of NDMS is Problem-Oriented Medical Information System - The Problem-Oriented Medical Information System, or PROMIS, was a hypertext system specially designed for maintaining health care records. PROMIS was developed at the University of Vermont in 1976, primarily by Jan Schultz and Dr. System Usability Scale (SUS) - The System Usability Scale (SUS) is a simple, ten-item attitude scale giving a global view of subjective assessments of usability. It was developed by John Brooke at Digital Equipment Company in the UK in 1986 as a tool to be used in usability engineering of electronic office systems.
