Beyond Late Development: Upgrading Policies in Taiwan by Alice H. Amsden,

Beyond Late Development: Upgrading Policies in Taiwan by Alice H. Amsden,
In this book Alice Amsden and Wan-wen Chu cover new ground by analyzing the phenomenon of high-end catch-up. They study how leading firms from the most advanced latecomer countries like Taiwan have increased their market share in mature high-tech industries and services. The profits that true innovators in these industries once enjoyed have already declined, but profit rates are still above average. The latecomer firm that succeeds in capturing these rents earns "second-mover" advantage. Amsden and Chu examine the successful second movers in electronics and modern services. The critical factors, they show, are the government policies and large-scale firms that drive skills, speed, and scale. R&D in Taiwan was usually undertaken in conjunction with government labs, which prepared the way for local production of the next hot, mature product. Speed in ramping up at the firm level depended on project execution capabilities and access to capital. Scale proved to be an absolute entry requirement in modern service sectors, and was crucial to win subcontracts from leading foreign firms and to secure key components from world-class suppliers in the electronics industry. The authors challenge current orthodoxy along two lines. First, they argue that government played an important role through interventions that went beyond the market model and overcame the limitations of networking. Interventions possibly promoted mature high-tech even more than mid-tech. Second, the entrepreneurs in Taiwan were nationally owned large-scale firms rather than multinational companies.

Quantum Scaling in Many-Body Systems by Mucio A. Continentino,
Quantum Scaling in Many-Body Systems by Mucio A. Continentino,
This book on quantum phase transitions has been written by one of the pioneers in the application of scaling ideas to many-body systems -- a new and exciting subject that has relevance to many areas of condensed matter and theoretical physics. One of the few books on the subject, it emphasizes strongly correlated electronic systems. Although dealing with complex problems in statistical mechanics, it does not lose sight of the experiments and the actual physical systems which motivate the theoretical work. The book starts by presenting the scaling theory of quantum critical phenomena. Critical exponents for different systems are calculated using both the momentum space and real space renomalization group approaches. The former is developed without the use of Feynman diagrams, allowing nonspecialists to fully appreciate the underlying physics of this method. The case of heavy fermions as an example of systems close to a zero temperature phase transition is presented and discussed in detail. This is also the case of non-Fermi liquid behavior associated with a quantum critical point. Metal-insulator transitions are discussed within the scaling approach. The book ends with a discussion on first order quantum phase transitions, in particular those which occur due to a fluctuation-induced mechanism.

System Usability Scale (SUS) - The System Usability Scale (SUS) is a simple, ten-item attitude scale giving a global view of subjective assessments of usability. It was developed by John Brooke at Digital Equipment Company in the UK in 1986 as a tool to be used in usability engineering of electronic office systems.

Decade (log scale) - A decade on a graphical logarithmic scale represents multiplication by 10 from the previous value. It is commonly used to represent the frequency response of electronic circuits since depicting frequencies on a linear scale is not practical.

Letter scale - A letter scale is a weighing scale used for weighing letters in order to determine the correct amount of postage. Until the 1990s most letter scales were mechanical, but today electronic scales are the most common.

Digital Command System - Digital Command System (DCS) is an electronic control system for O scale 3-rail model trains and toy trains, developed by MTH Electric Trains as a rival to Lionel's Trainmaster Command Control. It is similar in concept to DCC, the open industry standard used by HO scale and other 2-rail direct current trains.
